Limewash paint is a great way to add an artisan feel to a space, but how do I get it? This post is all about where to buy limewash paint and how to apply it.
Limewashing my home was one of the best decisions I've made. It gave my walls a beautiful, intentional design that felt both unique and natural. Unlike plastered walls, limewash paint offers a more flexible and temporary option. Let's dive in!
WHAT IS LIMEWASH PAINT?
People have been using limewash paint for thousands of years to decorate and protect their walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. It's made from hydrated lime, water, and sometimes colors. Limewash paint is known for its unique look and ability to create an attractive, aged effect that adds character and texture to any space.
BENEFITS OF LIMEWASH PAINT
If you want to add character and texture to your house or building, consider using limewash paint. It's a safe and natural option that doesn't contain any harmful chemicals. One of the unique benefits of limewash paint is that it allows surfaces and walls to breathe, which can help prevent moisture-related issues like mildew.

HOW TO APPLY LIMEWASH PAINT
QUICK TUTORIAL:
- Prepare the surface: Clean the surface you want to paint thoroughly, removing any dirt, dust, or debris. Repair any cracks or damage, and ensure the surface is dry and free of any loose materials
- Dilute the limewash paint (if applicable): Most limewash paint comes ready to be used but it may come in a concentrated form, so you MAY need to dilute it with water. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to see if this is necessary.
- Apply the first coat: Use a brush or roller to apply the diluted limewash paint to the surface. Work in sections, applying the paint evenly with long, vertical strokes. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second coat. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see application videos.
- Apply the second coat: Apply a second coat of diluted limewash paint in the same manner as the first coat, using long, vertical strokes. This will help create a uniform, textured finish. Allow the second coat to dry completely.
- Consider a third coat: Depending on the desired effect, you may want to apply a third coat of limewash paint. This can help create a more opaque finish or deepen the color.
- Seal the surface (optional): If desired, you can seal the limewash paint surface with a clear sealant or wax. This will help protect the surface and make it easier to clean. This is especially useful for high traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
