Bedrooms are often overlooked and are at the end of the list for home projects. There is no reason to put our resting space last anymore. A bedroom should be a space that gives us rest and refuge. My goal for this room was to get organized and feel cozy without breaking the bank. This room is very small but, with careful design execution it can appear significantly larger. The room will undergo a remodel in the future, but this budget-friendly makeover will get me through for now.
Before Transformation
I know upgrading a bedroom can be expensive but it doesn't have to be. Follow these simple tips to transform your bedroom into a place of relaxation, regeneration, and have a stylish oasis. Also, it is budget-friendly for college apartments, or rented apartment.
9 BUDGET MAKEOVER IDEAS FOR A COZY BEDROOM
1. Declutter The Space
The first (and most important) step is to declutter the space. This involves going from top to bottom and left to right. Go through your closet and drawers for old clothes and store seasonal items accordingly. Take a look at your furniture and decor items to see what works and is no longer working. Consider asking yourself these questions: Is the color too much? Do these items reflect my personal style? Are things too busy? This will instantly make you feel refreshed and jumpstart your makeover. Pay attention to what your eyes are drawn to in the room.
2. Paint the Room
This was one of the most important steps for a makeover. If you are renting, ask your landlord first. Many times they are happy to get a free paint job. A fresh coat of paint will instantly make the room feel fresh and give you a blank slate to work with. I love Snowbound White by Sherwin williams. Consider using neutral tones for a soothing mood. There are 3 benefits to neutrally colored walls.
- This allows you to easily change up the decor items and bedding without clashing to the wall color.
- It can make your room appear larger than it is.
- Light will be distributed more throughout the room and feel airy.
3. Reuse Old Furniture
If buying furniture is not an option, reuse your old furniture with new eyes. Open up your mind to new possibilities to your existing pieces. A quick search for styles with the type of furniture you have can open the door to a new style for your room. Painting or restaining the furniture may be a good option for an updated feel. You may consider replacing one of the pieces, such as a new nightstand. It's okay to break up the 'whole set' and introduce new pieces. This should reflect your style while complementing existing furniture pieces.
4. Add New Bedding
New bedding can go a long way. I chose to go with white bedding to freshen up the room and give it a minimal feel. Layer fresh linens, whether your go neutral or bold. Even though it may be scary, I took on simple white sheets. They can be maintained white by alternating with another set and by washing them regularly. I also layered a white duvet. This duvet cover set was about $20! If you don't have a duvet insert you can simply use your old comforter and cover it with a new duvet cover.
5. Keep It Simple!
It can be easy to go overboard and decorate your life way. Think about that feeling when you first enter a fresh hotel room. The simplicity and fresh white sheets are very inviting. Edit down the items you put in the room. Add the things that matter. The bedroom is a great space to highlight personal photos, artwork, and items that celebrate the life you have lived.
6. Use A Lumbar Throw Pillow
There was a time where layering 18 throw pillows was a must for a comfy bed. However, with time I learned the hassle with dealing with pillows every morning and night. It is not worth it. Simplify the number of pillows you accent your bed with to one or two. A nice lumbar pillow is a nice way to style the bed that will save you time. As a bonus, this might keep your partner happy with less pillows to deal with everyday.
7. Install Curtains - The Right Way
Curtains are an absolute must for a small room! I often find curtains installed the wrong way. Make sure you hang them to the ceiling if possible to make the small room appear larger. Also, ensure the curtains are placed wider the window. This will make the window look bigger.
White window treatments (curtains) bring a fresh and airy feel. I love using the HILJA Curtains from Ikea. They are very affordable for only a $12.99/pair. TIP: I like to double them up (two panels on each side) to give them a more high-end look.
8. Use An Area Rug
Put a rug to add texture to your bedroom. Layer on top your hardwood floor or existing carpet. Step back and look at the wall color, bedding, and lighting for inspiration. I love a neutral Persian style rug! You can't go wrong with gray, ivory, or white rugs. A large rug can make the room appear larger. You can order a nice large rug on Amazon that won't hurt your wallet.
9. Hang A Modern Mirror
A modern (or appropriate style) mirror over the nightstand can help distribute light across the room and modernize old furniture. Mirrors are great because it's always fun creating new vignettes with the season. This half-oval mirror was only $30 at my local Hobby Lobby but you can certainly find a similar one on Amazon. A crisp modern mirror juxtaposed with traditional furniture to create a nice transitional styled room. Also, a mirror will make the room appear larger.
