4 Tips To Transform A Coffee Table
1. Add a fresh coat of paint
Don't be afraid to paint your table. Often times this is the easiest way to get a new look without having to refinish. Many times this is the only option. I highly recommend using a chalk paint. This will give you a matte finish and make your peice look professionally painited. Make sure to follow up with some polycyclic to protect your hard work. A foam brush roller or higher quality brush will be your best friend for this!
Is there an easy way to paint? Well, kind of. You can potentially spray paint if you have a smaller piece. I would HIGHLY recommend a matte finish though. My favorite is this one by Rustoleum!
If you can, use primer to prevent the wood from staining your lighter-toned paint. In this case I was painting the table black and it was not totally necessary, but it doesn't hurt. It also creates a stronger bond between the paint and furniture.
2. Use a Gel Stain For A Darker Wood Finish
In the video above I used regular stain (Minwax Ebony), but I honestly would prefer gel stain. If you haven't heard of it before, it's basically a type of stain you can apply over existing stain and finish. It is pudding-like and recommended for all skill levels. No sanding required!!
I highly recommend giving your furniture a good clean. Many people use TSP for deep cleaning and removing gloss.
3. Invest In A Sprayer
Paint sprayers are very common, and thus affordable these days. I would recommend this if you plan on flipping furniture frequently. This honestly gives you a professional finish and saves you the hassle for painting with a brush or roller. Make sure you tape off areas you do not want painted (glass, hardware, and such).
4. Protect With A Good Finish
I might be repeating myself but I highly recommend Minwax Polycrylic in a MATTE finish. This looks more high-end than glossy finishes (in my opinion). It is water-based, less toxic, and dries quickly! 2-3 coats will be sufficient.
