Christmas time has always been my favorite time of year. The thrill of of DIYing is especially high too. There's something special about having a handmade quality to holiday decor and gift giving. These clay ornaments are the perfect DIY this season. You can create just about any shape you can think of. So easy to make!
Of course you can make these ornaments for your tree but you can add them to your gift wrapping. Gift giving is already special. So, making custom ornaments takes your thought to the next level.
There are two options for using clay. You may buy oven-bake clay or you can make homemade baking clay. I made my own clay to get a cookie-like ornament.

How To Make Clay Ornaments:
- Oven bake clay (or homemade oven-bake clay)
- cookie cutters
- straw
- string or twine
- dry sprigs or stamps
- acrylic paint
- acrylic sealer (especially needed for homemade clay)
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 3/4 cup water
You will bake ornaments at 350F for 45 minutes, until hardened.
- Preheat oven per clay instructions and prep a cookie sheet with parchment paper
- Flatten out clay with rolling pin (or plate) to about 1/4" thickness or so
- Cut desired shape with cookie cutter and puncture a small hole with a straw for hanging
- transfer to cookie sheet and stamp using sticks, greens, or anything really
- bake per oven instructions and allow to cool
- Paint as desired (optional)
- Spray one coat of acrylic sealer (recommended especially for homemade clay to prevent possible molding because it's technically food right?)
- tie string or twine for hanging the ornament
Feel free to get crazy with the shapes and stamp techniques. Use letter stamps to create custom names for gifts.
I hope you enjoy this DIY. It's a great way to add a handmade quality to the season and exercise creativity. Let me know how it turns out down in the comments! You can also tag me on Instagram to be featured: casa_refined
