Who doesn't love a quick thrift flip?! Today I am giving you three (home decor) DIY ideas you can do with items you find at the thrift store. I'm sharing two vases, a photo frame and some dirt. Yes, dirt!
Also, don't worry, these flips are beginner level. You cannot fail!
I am often told by people they're not good at DIY-ing. One good thing about working with thrift finds is that they're very low-risk so you really aren't losing much if you 'fail' at them. I think creativity is like a muscle that you must work to get stronger at it. It just takes practice. If you're reluctant, just give it a try. You CAN do it!

I encourage you to watch my YouTube video (on my young channel!) for a step by step tutorial. I will also provide verbal instructions down below. Tag me on Instagram @casa_refined and let me know how they turn out!
1. Tall Vase
For this flip you need a vase, Smokey Beige by Rustoleum and some dirt.
- Step 1. Apply one coat of spray paint to vase, let fully dry.
- Step 2. Apply second coat, let dry to touch. Rub dirt all over.
- Step 3. Carefully rub off dirt with a wet rag until you get the distressing you want.
2. Updated Art
- Step 1. Remove glass and artwork from the frame
- Step 2. Paint the frame (in the video I used acrylic, but wished I would have used spray paint)
- Step 3. Create a new matte board using poster board (older matte boards tend to turn yellow as they age). Trace with the old board to determine dimension.
- Step 4. Print new art (I like to print large photos from FedEx for under $1).
3. Mini Vase
- Step 1. Apply one coat of spray paint to vase, let fully dry.
- Step 2. Apply second coat. Rub dirt all over. Apply more paint and let dry.
- Step 3. Carefully rub off dirt with a wet rag until you get the distressing you want.
