Thrift shopping seems to be a growing trend. Thrift flips are a great way to upcycle and transform those items into something that looks new and expensive. Today I am sharing a 3 DIYs that you will want to copy. These are made from common items you likely have at home or can be found at a thrift store.
The first project is a coffee table. I'll show you how to restore and give a table an update. The second DIY is making an ugly bowl look vintage. The third DIY is crafting textured wall art. Check out my YouTube video below for the full webisode!

1. COFFEE TABLE RESTORATION
This oval coffee table was begging to be restored. I saw it a the thrift store and it looked like someone had started a DIY on it (and it did not look good). Here what I did:
- Sanded the top with 80, 160, AND 220 grit sandpaper using my $20 orbital sander
- Applied primer to the table top, followed by 3 coats of black paint
- applied stain over the entire base (Dark Ebony by Minwax)
- Polycrylic in Matte Finish over the entire table
2. Large Vintage-Inspired Bowl
How many wooden bowls have you passed up at the thrift store due to its color? Here is one way to transform a bowl and make it look vintage/distressed. Here is what I did:
- Sanded the bowl down with 80 grit sandpaper
- Mix together Simply White stain, Weathered Oak stain, and Polyurethane (equal parts) - this will add a whitewash and cancel out the red/gold tones
- Apply a light coat of Dark Walnut stain to add the vintage look
3. Easy Textured Wall Art
Thrift stores have an abundance of wall art. I found this piece for one dollar. Paint over any canvas and apply this texture technique for a minimal look. Here is what I did:
- Tape out the matte and frame
- Apply paintable caulking over the art (I got mine from Dollar Tree)
- Use a putty knife to spread the caulking
- Place plastic bag ontop to add more texture, remove immediately, and let the caulking dry
- Paint white or add some brown for an off-white color
